Sometimes I listen to myself. (Not very often. I can’t seem to listen and talk at the same time. Funny how that works. Note to self: Truly listen.)
I was on the phone with a friend who blogs. Someone that is well versed in the word and has a steady following. She’s at a crossroads. Questioning everything. Cleaning out her virtual closet. She wanted to talk through what should stay and what gets bagged up for Goodwill.
I heard myself say a few things that might be worth sharing. Statements that she repeated back to me. We both processed them and realized the advice wasn’t half bad.
- Your posts should either scare you to hit publish or make you want to re-read it months later.
- Write to a specific person, preferably one of your friends. Keep them in mind. The real you will come through.
- Get over the rejection before it comes.
- If you’re not perfect (and none of us are), you’ll have more readers.
- Please stop asking ‘How can I make (more) money off my blog?’ Whether you realize it or not, this thinking is changing your writing, style, and voice. The money will come – if you are genuinely yourself.
- Would you want to read your blog?
- Combine storytelling with your theme. I’m not seeking more facts, but a soulful connection.
- Go. Do the hard things. Be amazing.
(Now, to take my own advice. )
